Kudos to Woodburn Creatives for welcoming and supporting Fuser Production’s debut performance of Intact into their space. Woodburn Creatives is a relatively new space that is providing artists and creatives a much needed space to showcase an alternative style of theatre.
Intact is essentially a soldier’s journey that takes us on heady ride from the battlefield to her private world, of personal trials, tribulations, angst, self- discovery and ultimately acceptance.
The performance relies on very little dialogue, this is physical theatre at its best. The choreography is immersive and simply mesmerising, from the bloody and chaotic battlefield to the angst of an injured soldier on a hospital bed to her painful recovery in the loneliness of her home. The stand-out pieces were the dream sequence where the soldier is transported back to the battlefield and her drug induced, fluid dance-like haze.
Olivia Hadley as a solo performer carries the play beautifully, her body language changes throughout, portraying a soldier in combat in the beginning to her painful journey of recovery and self-realisation, which carries the audience with her in every moment of her captivating performance. The remarkable piece came from her in the interaction with the white swivel chair which was devised as a classically beautiful dance-like piece.
The lighting and sound design is brilliant, complimenting rather than supporting the narrative. The set design is clever especially the steel table that converts to depict different locations. Devised by Cecile Payet, the performance is flawless and captivates the audience, we look forward to seeing more from her and Fuser Productions.
