Always a Bridesmaid

Who doesn’t want to spend time with friends and have a bit of laugh? If you have missed that during COVID, now is your chance to get all your friends together and march to Pavilion Theatre at Castle Hill for a fun evening where they are showing Always a Bridesmaid.

The play by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten – and directed by CHP stalwart, Meredith Jacobs is a cracker of a comedy. The storyline although not very original, reminds you of the Hollywood comedies like Runaway Bride, Bride Wars and 27 Dresses; due to the finesse in the performances that the actors demonstrated. The story revolves around four girlfriends who had promised to be each other’s bridesmaids in high school still keeping that promise in their fifties. The characters are written cleverly. Each one having a unique personality and cynicism however the common thread that binds them is the love they have for each other and the spirit of one for all and all for one.

The funny dialogues and perfect execution of the roles trigged much laughter in the audience. Kudos to the cast Chantal Vavasour, Penny Johnson, Annette Snars, Meredith Jacobs, Leigh Scanlon and Gina Willison who brought the story to life. Although the story is about weddings, however the underlying theme is friendship, trust and love. Anybody who has friends and cherish the memories of time well spent with them will relate to this story. Overall, it is an evening worth spending watching this refreshing play. Hey, who doesn’t want a laugh!

Set designed by Trevor Chaise and team could have been better supported by the lighting designer James Winters especially when the play runs over various seasons and years. The costume and wardrobe by Annette Snars, Jennifer Wilson, Jennifer Hurst, Annette van Roden, Chantal Vavasour & Stephen Snars is the highlight that enhance the acting and comedy.

Castle Hill Players has been entertaining the community for many decades and great to see a full house audience confirming that theatre is back in the community after a brief halt.
